Re AA History in the 19th and early 20th century there were 2 movements at work that would influence AA — one was a set of spiritual revivals and another was the temperance movement. There were various forms of these, e.g., the Oxford Movement and the Oxford Group (spiritual) and prohibition (temperance). Examples of these are (spiritual) attachment #1 — “Lead Kindly Light” by John Henry Newman of the Oxford Movement (not Group) and attachment #2 “Taking the Pledge” card/movement lead by an Irishman Mathew Theobald. These “crossed over” when Bill (take the pledge) and Dr. Bob (spiritual readings) met — don’t drink and find your own spirituality to resolve unmanageability.
